The Need to Read

Happy 2015! This year my New Year’s resolution is to write, edit, and repeat! And when I’m not doing that, I’m going to READ.

Back in the fall, I was emailing with one of my favorite bloggers, Gabby, from What’s Beyond Forks and she inspired me to write this blog post about how life sometimes interferes with our need to read. I absolutely love to read! I have loved reading since I was a child and it’s from that love of the written word that my desire to become an author blossomed. But I’ve discovered it’s difficult, if not impossible, for me to write my own books and read for pleasure at the same time.

I’ve been writing more than reading for the past couple of years, so I haven’t had the opportunity to read for pleasure at all. It had been way too long since I sat down and got lost in a book – well, I need to clarify, it’d been too long since I read a book that a) was not my own writing and b) was not read for the purpose of proofreading or editing.

Well, I had to fix that! But I have to admit that I’ve probably indulged in my need to read for a little too long. One of my amazing friends, Circe, who also happens to be my favorite librarian, suggested some amazing books and I haven’t been able to stop reading! So often the right book comes into my life at the right moment. Reading is more than just escapism for me, it’s also gives me a chance to learn more about myself—words are not just words thrown together to make up a story, they are arrows that pierce my heart and soul with inspiration.

People who aren’t readers don’t understand the Need to Read. To me, the need to read is similar to thirst or hunger. The desire becomes stronger the longer you go without and once you have filled up, you vow never to wait so long to drink/eat/read again. So, I’ve been on a bit of a break from writing…. but don’t worry, it was only temporary—I’ll be getting back to the fifth book in the Witches of Spring Hill series very soon, but in the meantime, I’m working on short story for in between book 4 and 5. More to come on that later! In the meantime, if I’m not writing, you’ll find me in the coziest places, lost in another author’s words, letting go of everything except the pure pleasure that comes from reading a good book.

I hope your New Year’s resolution is to read more books!
